TPNW  virtual panel session – Thurs 17th June 2021

Feedback

The contribution from Peter Hopkins was particularly insightful, given his role as we moved towards A Day.  Interesting to hear that simplification at least removed the discretionary nature and conflicts within the old rules.

Hearing from Peter who was ‘there at the time’

I liked the fact there were people who could speak first-hand about pension simplification as they were involved in the roll out.

The historical perspective and the radical alternative suggestions

Some very interesting views on the good, the bad & the ugly from simplification

The diverse opinions and views on what simplification is

The perspectives given both in the intros but also Q&A were very much of the people who were and are involved or connected at the most strategic level. So rather than just commentator views and knowledge these were of greater value.

I would like to say that for me it was a very good and generally interesting meeting, probably the best TVPN meeting so far.  It was a simple formula – a big, broad, fairly general topic and an excellent panel including a couple of pensions superstars:  what could possibly go wrong?

I enjoyed each of the 4 panellists because they were all engaging and presented their findings/defences in an entertaining way

This was an absolutely superb session. I found the comparisons between what changed in the past and what needs to change in the future fascinating.

I think hearing different perspectives on the same topic is useful (and interesting).  Good not to have too much “what (s)he said” from panellists.

The reminder that pension tax relief has to cope with people (like public sector workers) who have DB rights and DC rights, so just having separate systems for each doesn’t quite work.

Each speaker had their own views and ideas, sometimes similar to others but not always.

Fairness and simplicity was echoed throughout, and I think finding better solutions going forward to suit everyone will be an enormous challenge.”

Hearing the political calculations

The range of views & the openness of the speakers

Hearing from other people

Challenging my thoughts on what simplification actually did plus how much should we contribute and when to gain the best benefit. It has reminded me how much I like pensions and reminded me that there is a great deal to familiarise myself with again

The mix of discussion between implications of complexity for technical aspects of the system and higher policy level outcomes.

Thanks to John for chairing, and all Patricia’s hard work.  I wasn’t at TPNW when Malcolm was there, though I did see him in other circles.  I thought it was a fitting moment to reflect on what he set up.

Enjoyable, and good to get questions in advance.   Maybe four speakers is one too many, as fewer would give more chance for interaction and discussion?

The polling was a good little addition as is this feedback form

Like 15 years – fascinating and thought provoking. Well done keeping it that way.

All the speakers were superb, really different in their approach and each added a different perspective to the discussion.
